Arizona

The Arizona State Legislature consists of a lower house, the House of Representatives with 60 members, and an upper house, the Senate with 30 members. The state is divided into 30 electoral districts, two representatives and one senator share each of the electoral district.

Members of the House of Representatives and the State Senate are elected to serve two-year terms, with term limits of four consecutive terms (8 years) in either house.

Statewide Elected Officials:

  • Governor: Douglas Anthony “Doug” Ducey (R) 
  • Lieutenant Governor: No position of Lt. Governor. The Governor is succeeded by the Secretary of State.
  • Attorney General: Mark Brnovich (R)
  • Secretary of State: Katie Hobbs (D)
  • Capital: Phoenix
  • Population of Latinos/Hispanics: 30.9%

Legislative Session and Budget Timetable

The Arizona State Legislature meets annually convening on the second Monday of January of each year.  Arizona’s budget is biennial covering two fiscal years.

No carry-over (annual session)

September 1- State agencies submit their budgets requests to the Governor.

November- December- Agency hearings are held.

January- The Governor must submit a budget proposal to the Legislature.

January to April- Legislature debates and adopts the biennial budget.
