Washington

The Washington State Legislature is a bicameral legislature consisting of the lower Washington House of Representatives with 98 members Representatives, and the upper Washington State Senate with 49 members plus the Lieutenant Governor acting as President. The state is divided into 49 legislative districts, each of which elect one senator and two representatives.

Senators serve four-year terms without term limits, and members of the House are elected to a two-year term also without term limits.

  • Governor: Jay Robert Inslee (D), 1st Term
  • Lieutenant Governor: Cyrus Habib (D)
  • Attorney General: Bob Ferguson (D)
  • Capital: Olympia
  • Population of Latinos/Hispanics: 12.4%

Legislative Session and Budget Timetable

The Washington Legislature begins each legislative session annually on the second Monday in January.  In odd-numbered years, when the state budget is debated upon, the State Legislature meets for 105 days, and in even-numbered years for 60 days.  The state budget is biennial covering two fiscal years.

September- State agencies submit their budget requests to the Governor.

December 20- The Governor submits a budget proposal to the Legislature.

April-May- The Legislature adopts the budget.
